Medical and psychologic evaluations suggest that most of these patients have significant psychologic/psychiatric dysfunction as a major component of their illness. Whether this is the cause of their symptoms or results from the severity/duration of their symptoms is often not clear. Even if a particular practitioner cannot provide help for a given patient, good faith attempts to direct the patient to someone who may be able to help is part of the Hippocratic process for all medical professionals.
